Hi, I believe that each school will have a different process and/or questions for applying to receive a scholarship. As well there are merit based scholarships and financial-need based scholarships - and that doesn't even begin to address the many special scholarships offered by different schools for candidates that come from specific backgrounds.
If you are talking about a financial-need scholarship, you would want to explain why you are in need of this scholarship - perhaps you have been working for a nonprofit, or suffered some family hardship that prevented you from saving money. There are many directions to take, it depends on your particular background. If it's another sort of scholarship, you'd need to see the specific question the school asks and then relate to it.
Hope that helps!

Hey Joy,
Thanks a lot for your detail reply.Really appreciate it.
Yup! you're right...
I think not many schools offer need-based scholarships,it's mostly merit-based scholarships and the latter I guess, heavily depends on one's overall candidacy and for this merit-based scholarships, most of the schools don't have any separate applications. In that case, applicants need to show their best strength through their essays only I guess. Is there any other way to showcase this...? Your thoughts on this please...!
My second question is-In general how the need based offers are determined..? Is it based on the personal assets of the candidate solely or that of his/her family or else?
Look forward to your reply.
Yes, you are right - many if not most scholarships are offered with acceptance. If a school thinks you will be accepted to a more selective program, they might offer a scholarship to tilt the scales in their favor. As far as showcasing your strengths, I think it's throughout the whole application - essays, recommendations, CV, online application - the works.
As for determining need, my main reference would be Haas' essay question for financial based scholarships:
They ask:
• Please explain why you need financial assistance.
• Discuss efforts you have made to secure supplemental funding
• Elaborate on any special circumstances or hardships you currently face as applicable to the scholarships you selected in this application.
So inside there, you would explain why your family wasn't able to help you, and any other circumstances that prevent you from getting help in other places. I can't think of other schools' questions at the moment, but I imagine they are similar to some extent.
Best regards,
Joy
