"People perceive him as manipulative, and therefore do not trust him."

In the above example there are two independent clauses

1.People perceive him as manipulative
2.(people) do not trust him.

i am confused with the use of therefore. therefore at the beginning of the second clause will make second clause as dependent.

then how can we use ,'and' as coordination conjunction. please help with this.
